Discussion - The Role of Scientists in Climate Activism

Abstract
There are increasing calls for scientists to join in civil disobedience, support climate activists in protests, and other emerging approaches to push for climate action, both generally and specifically requested of our institute. Given the lack of clarity regarding the roles we play as scientists, including (but not limited to) how we can distinguish between private actions and our official roles at the Wegener Center, and what (if any) institutional guidelines might exist, we would like to hold a special Common Space devoted to discussion of this growing issue.
This will be a unique Common Space session, in that we will have opening remarks from Douglas Maraun and Ilona Otto, before opening up the floor for a broader discussion among the Wegener Center. To hopefully kickstart and frame discussion, we have created a Miro board (an online whiteboard) where statements and questions can be posted - we have suggested an initial question and a few answer categories, but any additional suggestions are welcome.
